I begin with a childhood memory. Sitting around the dining room table. My father has returned home for lunch. He told the story of one of his colleagues; a doctor, nicknamed "The Butcher." My mother was the lead person in this discussion, she being a public health nurse. On a call into the country she encountered a very ill client, called the family doctor, Dr. X, who came to this patient's house. The patient was an elder, who received a perfunctory examination by Dr. X. My mother was standing to the side. At the conclusion of the exam my mother was told by the good doctor that the patient would be alright. Within thirty seconds of the examination's conclusion, and the doctor's departure, a death rattle sounded in the house, and the patient expired. What was going on?!
